Skiathos Greece, is a very green island covered by a thick pine forest. It is the smallest but most cosmopolitan island of the Sporades group, located in the north-western Aegean.
Skiathos Town is the chief place and indeed the island’s only real town, where almost all the permanent inhabitants of the island live. Skiathos Town, has narrow cobbled streets, its little whitewashed houses with tiled roofs and its old churches. There is a ban on high rise hotels on the island. The harbour front at Skiathos is split into old and new.
The locals grow olives, fruit and walnuts and there is both local honey and wine.
The island of Skiathos has seventy beaches all around very popular and can get really crowded during July and August. It was one of the first island to cash in on the tourist boom in the 60s. Agia Paraskevi is a perfect beach for the family, Lalaria is a white pebble beach and it can only be reached by boat, Jason and the Argonauts was partly filmed here. Koukonaries is one of Greece’s most famous beaches a long sandy beach with beautiful surroundings, taverns, snack bars and water sports. It is known as Chrisi Ammos Golden Sand since the sand there is extremely fine and shines under the summer sun. Banana Beach is the most popular nude beach in Skiathos.
The town has an enchanting maze of narrow streets, traditional taverns, colourful harbour front, charming craft shops, stylish boutiques and chic night life. Papadiamantis street is the main street of the town for shopping you can find clothes, souvenirs, jewellery and leather belts.
Skiathos is the island of entertainment; every thing is made for the pleasure and the enjoyment of the visitor. Most of the entertainment on Papadiamanti street, Polytechniou street, Evangelistra street and boarding the side of the port. Bars, restaurants, cafes and night clubs can be found every where in the town and in some big hotel units.
At the church Tres Ierarches is the icon of Holy Mother Panaghia Kounistra, the patron saint of the island. In side the church are the icons of the prophets and apostles, originally housed in the church of Christos at Kastro.
It is ideal for religious tourism as it has important historic monasteries such as the Monastery of Panagia Evaggelistria, Kounistra and Kehria connected with the island’s history and it attracts pilgrims mostly during summer period.
Have you always enjoyed travelling to the Greek Islands? Do you enjoy your movies? Then cheap holidays in Skiathos seem to be cropping up within the travel industry for summer 2010. This is a perfect opportunity to visit the beautiful island of Skiathos and visit the areas in where the famous film, Mama Mia, was filmed.
Visit some of Skiathos’ most attractive areas such as Skiathos harbour, which is where a lot of the filming took place. Famous people such as Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Amanda Seyfried were all a part of it and thoroughly enjoyed the island and the people living here.
On the island of Skiathos you can visit some really inspirational places such as, Bourtzi which is a Venetian styled fortress, just off Skiathos Town, and was designed to keep the pirates away in the thirteenth century. This is also where a lot of the cast of Mama Mia took time out when they weren’t filming.
Another mainland venture in Skiathos is Meteora. This is an area where the earliest monasteries of Meteora are perched on pinnacles of rocks and at the time, the monks’ aims of this position was to be as close to to the gods as possible. It is also the area that the famous James Bond film, ‘For your eyes only’ was partly filmed.
Skiathos has more than sixty beaches which are all mainly sandy. This is a fabulous plus point for Skiathos as many Greek islands have mostly rocky or shingle beaches.
If you are really into films and visiting film locations then Skiathos is a great place to travel to. With one of the most popular films of 2008, Mama Mia, that is still ever so popular in film and theatre format even now, I believe it will remain a popular place for lovers of Mama Mia for years to come. As cheap holidays in Skiathos are available to book now for summer 2010, then now is the time to get prepared and booked up.
